Study of Society and the Environment (SOSE)
Philosophy
Study of Society and the Environment (SOSE) is an essential life skills subject that offers a student the opportunity to acquire a range of technical, personal and interpersonal skills that will continue to serve them well as they progress into their adult life and become active and informed citizens.
Coursework
In the middle school deconstructed programs are presented that focus on developing essential learning skills. In Year 10, the course consolidates and extends upon essential learning that was developed in the Year 8 and 9 SOSE programs. The course delivery becomes more challenging as students progress through the middle phase of learning and is designed to develop and foster skills and ability required in independent learners.
Study of Society and the Environment units are delivered using a series of course work booklets completed in class using a companion text book SOSE Alive 1, 2 & 3 together with other selected resources. Revision and homework booklets are also used. These prepare students for the assessment task associated with each topic.
In Year 10 the course of study prepares a student for the study of Geography, Ancient History, ATSI Studies, Legal Studies or Tourism in the senior school. The course also includes a Certificate I in Work Education completed progressively over 3 terms. This includes preparation and completion of the Senior Education and Training Plan (SET Plan) required by the Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) as a prerequisite for enrolment in the senior school.
