Special Education Unit
The Special Education Unit at Woree State High School supports students with disabilities. Our area of specialisation is multiple impairments. This may include intellectual impairment, physical impairment, Autism Spectrum Disorder, visual impairment, hearing impairment and speech language impairment.
Programs are developed to support students through the Individual Education Plan process. Support is offered by a variety of personnel including Special Education Teachers, Teacher Aides, Advisory Teachers, Therapist and the School Nurse.
Students can be supported in mainstream classrooms, in the special education unit, or a combination of both.
Programs in the special education unit include literacy, numeracy, social skills, work readiness and communication.
We also provide community based programs designed to assist students in their transition from school to post school life. These include leisure, shopping and work experience programs. Several students are currently involved in school based traineeships and TAFE programs, which offer them an excellent pathway to employment. | ![]() |
Hospital School Program
The Cairns Base Hospital School provides an educational program for students while they are hospitalised. This program is staffed by the Woree State High School Special Education Unit. | |
A teacher and teacher aide provide a morning program assisting students to complete school work provided by their own schools or by the hospital school staff.
School provides a familiar experience in what can sometimes be a challenging and different environment. Learning experiences take into account the students' medical needs and can be done at the bedside or in the classroom area located in the paediatric ward.
Contact with the students' own school ensures continuity of education particularly when students are hospitalised for an extended period or on a regular basis. Regular contact with school and friends also assists in the smooth transition back to school when the students is ready to return.
