Literacy
The Learning Support Coordinator can help with any literacy (including numeracy) information. Support is available for students both in class and during the breaks. There are a number of computer programs available that offer individualised sessions to improve literacy. Woree State High School has a networked system of computers that can be accessed from a number of computer laboratories.
Assessment Support
The Learning Support staff is experienced in helping students to do their best in assignments and assessment of all subjects. They work with the class teachers to provide assistance so that all students have the opportunity to complete their work and meet their deadlines for handing in assessment pieces to the best of their ability.
ESL
Any students who speak English as a Second Language (ESL) and have recently arrived in Australia, are eligible for assistance from the school's Advisory Visiting Teacher - ESL. An ESL trained Learning Support Teacher's Aide at the school visits Woree State High School once a week.
Grade 8 Enrolments
At the end of the school year the Learning Support Coordinator liaises with the primary schools of Year 7 students enrolling into Year 8 at Woree State High School. Background information on all students is collected including the Year 7 Literacy and Numeracy results. The primary school Learning Support teachers hand over copies of the Appraised students Learning Plans and these are used to make any curriculum modifications or scaffolding that are necessary for individual students.
Education Adjustment Profile
Students have usually been EAP'ed by the time they enrol at high school. The Learning Support Coordinator works with the Head of Special Education Services (HOSES) when a student displays learning styles that may be eligible for SEU support. The HOSES manages the Special Education Unit (SEU) and works closely with the Learning Support Coordinator. Woree State High School places as many SEU students as possible in mainstream classes, with support if necessary.
Optiminds
The popular program Tournament of Minds now runs under the title Optiminds in Queensland. Woree State High School offers students the opportunity to be involved in this competition. Woree State High School will be entering two teams one in the Social Science section and another in the Mathematics and Engineering section. The teams initially compete in the Regional Competition held in August. The winners go on to compete in the State Competition in Brisbane and there is a National Competition too.
GERRIC
The Gifted Education Research, Resource and Information Centre (GERRIC) of the University of New South Wales conduct the Australian Secondary Schools Educational Talent Search for Year 7 to 9 students. The goal is to identify students who require further educational challenge to realise their talent and potential. The parents of the students who sit the test are given a score report and interpretation guide. For more information contact the Learning Support Coordinator or GERRIC 1800 626 824.
