Maths & Science Excellence Program 

The James Cook University Mathematics and Science Excellence Program is a once weekly after-school course that runs for eight weeks in the school term. It is open to all school students from grade 5 to 10 who enjoy mathematics and science.

Dynamic teachers, who specialise in science and mathematics education and have a passion for the subject, teach the program. The new series of entertaining investigations with chemistry, explosions, dissections, robots and high tech fun take these two subjects to a whole new level of excitement and interest.

Project 5 is an exciting initiative that brings affordable after school courses to the Cairns community. It is designed to inspire and educate.

There is a wide range of courses available so that every student can find something that interests them. Students can enrol in as many courses as they wish.

All teachers are chosen for their passion, enthusiasm and expertise in their areas. They are some of the best teachers from schools all over Cairns. The added involvement of university lecturers and experts from all fields make these courses very special.

Students from all primary and secondary schools across Cairns and district are invited to attend.

All course offered in Project 5 run for eight weeks of the school term. Students attend once a week from 4 pm until 5 pm. Supervision is provided from 3.30pm onwards. This series of courses starts on the week beginning 16th April.

The  courses  are  run  from  the  Woree  Community  Learning  Centre  which  is  situated  in the grounds of Woree State High School. All successful students will be notified through email.

Courses cost $89 for the eight weeks. Scholarships are available.

COURSES FOR TERM 2, 2O07

JCU Maths and Science Excellence Program

Another of the popular series of hands on experiments and investigations. Designed for students of all abilities, the programs develops the link between maths, science and having a fun and exciting time. In this new series students will make and study the maths of slime, design rockets, visit a naval survey ship, visit JCU, do chemistry and as always, make things explode.  (Wednesday or Thursday)

JCU Juniors 101

Especially for students of grades one to four. Sample the best of all the programs as you do experiments, launch rockets, cook food, play new games and have a brilliant time as you learn through these exciting experiences. (Monday or Tuesday)

JCU Engineering and Design 101

If you like to design and build then this course will help you take your skills to the next level. Work in state of the art workshops to design and make your own CO2 powered racing dragster and race them. (Tuesday or Wednesday)

JCU Creative Writing 101

If you love stories, poems and all types of writing, serious and comical you will really enjoy this course. You will learn about how language works and a range of thinking skills to lift your level as a communicator. You will work by yourself and with others on a range of skills that you will be able to use throughout your school career. (Tuesday or Thursday)

JCU Art 101

Develop your skills and practical knowledge under the guidance of professional artists and art teachers. Learn and practice a wide range of techniques in preparation for the JCU art show. (Monday or Tuesday)

JCU Food Science 101

Learn the skills and knowledge of food preparation and presentation as you work in a commercial quality kitchen. Create a new dish each week in this very tasty course. Please note there is an additional $25 charge for all the ingredients used in this course. (Wednesday or Thursday)

JCU Music Recording and Production 101

Learn the art of recording and producing music as you make your own MP3 tracks. Talented musician and producer Paul Sampson will show you how to record, mix and produce music to make music video using the latest software. There will also be the opportunity for those with musical talents to record their own tracks. (Tuesday or Wednesday)

JCU Fashion Design 101

Create a fashion portfolio as you learn and develop the skills of fashion drawing. This is a fun and interesting course with one of Cairns leading fashion teachers. (Thursday only)

JCU Computing and Multimedia 101

This amazing course takes you on a journey using the latest technology using robotics, digital microscopes animation software and game design. The perfect course for the techno-kid. (Monday or Tuesday)
